In short: Change MTU by logging into your router's admin panel, usually at 192.168.1.1 or similar. Find MTU under WAN or Internet settings. Set MTU between 1200 and 1500 depending on your ISP and connection. Save and reboot to apply. Verify with ping tests.

The short version

  • MTU affects packet size and can cause lag if set wrong
  • MTU settings are found in WAN or Internet sections of router admin
  • Typical MTU values range from 1200 to 1500, depending on ISP
  • Verify MTU change using ping with the 'Don't Fragment' flag
  • Changing MTU requires router restart to take effect

What you need before changing MTU

To change MTU on your router, you need access to its admin panel. Usually, this requires the router's IP address, username, and password.

Also, you need a device connected to the router via Wi-Fi or Ethernet.

Prepare a notepad or screenshot tool to record current settings before changing anything.

Check your router model and firmware version before changing MTU. Older firmware may have different menu layouts or lack MTU options. We go through ping spikes every 30 seconds in games step by step elsewhere on the site.

If you use a VPN or have multiple routers in your network, note that MTU changes on one device might not affect all traffic. Adjust MTU on the device that handles your internet connection directly.

  • Router IP address: usually 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1
  • Admin login credentials: username and password
  • Connected PC, phone, or tablet
  • Basic knowledge of accessing web interfaces

MTU settings are usually hidden under WAN, Internet, or Advanced settings in a router's admin panel. The exact location varies by brand.

For Xfinity routers, log in at 10.0.0.1, then go to Gateway > At a Glance > WAN to find MTU. Before you commit to anything, it is worth looking at mtu size causing fortnite ping issues.

BT routers require login at 192.168.1.254; navigate to Advanced Settings > Broadband > IP Config to see MTU.

Netgear routers use 192.168.1.1; find MTU under WAN Setup in the Basic or Advanced tab.

Spectrum routers typically use 192.168.1.1; MTU is in the Advanced > WAN Setup section. For the detail, see our notes on openwrt qos for game lag reduction.

Some routers hide MTU settings behind expert or developer modes. You might need to enable advanced settings by clicking a link or entering a special code in the interface.

If you can’t find MTU in the expected sections, consult your router’s manual or online support. Some models label it as "Packet Size" or "Maximum Transmission Unit" under different menus.

  • Xfinity: 10.0.0.1 > Gateway > At a Glance > WAN
  • BT: 192.168.1.254 > Advanced Settings > Broadband > IP Config
  • Netgear: 192.168.1.1 > WAN Setup
  • Spectrum: 192.168.1.1 > Advanced > WAN Setup

How to change MTU value on your router

Once you locate the MTU setting, enter a new value between 1200 and 1500. The default is usually 1500 bytes. If that sounds like your situation, read up on fixing lag from network buffering next.

Reduce MTU to around 1400 if you experience lag, packet loss, or fragmentation issues in games.

Avoid values below 1200 as too small an MTU reduces throughput and can cause other issues.

After entering the new MTU, save changes. The router usually asks to reboot. Reboot to apply settings. We cover using vpn and powerline adapter checks in its own article.

MTU values are in bytes and usually increments of 8. Choose values divisible by 8 for best compatibility.

If your ISP uses PPPoE, the default MTU might be 1492 or lower. Setting it to 1500 can cause packet loss.

Try changing MTU in small steps, like decreasing by 10 bytes each time, to find the best balance between speed and stability. If that sounds like your situation, read up on why traceroute doesn't work next.

  1. Log into your router admin panel.
  2. Navigate to the WAN or Internet settings where MTU is displayed.
  3. Change the MTU value to the desired number (e.g., 1400).
  4. Save or apply the setting.
  5. Restart the router to activate the change.

Verify your MTU with a ping test using the 'Don't Fragment' flag to detect the max packet size your connection accepts.

On Windows, open Command Prompt and run: ping google.com -f -l 1472. Adjust 1472 until you find the largest size that doesn't fragment.

Add 28 bytes to the largest ping size to get the MTU. For example, a ping size of 1472 means MTU is 1500 bytes.

If the ping fails or fragmented, lower the size until successful, confirming the actual MTU.

Use the ping test on multiple websites to confirm consistent MTU across the internet, not just one server.

A successful test with no fragmentation proves the MTU is set correctly. If fragmentation occurs, packets will split, causing delays or loss.

Save the ping outputs as proof of your settings, especially if you troubleshoot with your ISP later.

  1. Open Command Prompt or Terminal on your PC.
  2. Type: ping [destination] -f -l [size], e.g. ping google.com -f -l 1472.
  3. If ping succeeds, increase size; if it fails, decrease size.
  4. Once largest size passes, add 28 to determine MTU.

Why adjusting MTU can fix lag and packet loss in games

MTU controls maximum packet size on your network. If packets are too big, they fragment or drop, causing lag, stutter, or packet loss.

Many ISPs do not handle large packets well, especially over DSL or VPN connections, so lowering MTU reduces fragmentation.

A mismatched MTU can cause intermittent high ping and packet loss in games like Valorant, Fortnite, or CS2.

Adjusting MTU helps the router and ISP handle packets smoothly, reducing lag spikes and rubber-banding.

Games with frequent small packets, like FPS titles, benefit more from correct MTU than games relying on large data transfers.

An MTU too high causes routers to break packets, increasing latency and jitter, while too low MTU wastes bandwidth with extra headers.

Adjusting MTU is a quick fix for lag spikes but doesn’t replace hardware or ISP upgrades needed for consistent performance.

Avoid using random MTU values suggested online without testing first. Each network behaves differently.

Don’t change MTU during active downloads or streaming; it can interrupt connections and cause temporary errors.

Keep a backup of your router’s original MTU and other network settings in case you want to revert quickly.

  • Skipping router reboot -> MTU change won’t apply until you restart the router
  • Setting MTU too low (<1200) -> causes throughput drops and more lag
  • Not testing MTU after change -> you might not fix the lag problem
  • Changing MTU without backup -> can lose original working settings

Questions people still ask

What is the best MTU size for gaming?

Best MTU depends on your ISP and connection type. Usually, 1400-1472 bytes reduces lag and packet loss better than default 1500.

Can MTU changes fix all lag problems?

No, MTU affects packet fragmentation but can’t fix Wi-Fi signal issues or slow hardware causing lag.

How often should I check my MTU?

Check when you experience lag spikes or after ISP changes. Otherwise, it’s usually stable.

Will changing MTU affect my internet speed?

Too low MTU can reduce throughput. Set it as high as your network supports without fragmentation.

Can I change MTU on a mobile hotspot or 5G router?

Some advanced mobile routers allow MTU changes; check your device’s manual.

I've changed MTU on multiple router brands, and proper verification is key to real lag fixes.
